Landscaping 101
June 14, 2021
Now that the warm weather has arrived, it is finally time to get started on those landscaping projects you’ve been putting off. If you have a lot that you are hoping to get done this year, you might be unsure of where to start. Our Landscaping 101 Guide is just for you!
1. Start in the Front of Your Home
When landscaping your yard, you will want to start with the front of your home. Using the front door as a focal point, think about how any additions can frame this space. If your driveway is a direct path from the street to your home, you might consider softening the look with a planting bed. Remember to keep sunlight in mind. Your home will oftentimes block sunlight in spots of your yard throughout the day.
2. Hardscaping
If you are tackling any hardscaping projects this summer, be sure to get them done before planting. A porch, sidewalk, new driveway, decks, or fences are all projects that should take priority.
3. Landscaping in the Back
Many of us use our backyards as an outdoor living space for friends and family. If you need privacy in the back, think about adding in a fence, larger shrubs, or trees. Keep in mind that you should plan for 12-15 years for most trees to be fully grown.
4. Usability of the Side Yard
Often, side yards can be narrow strips of land that are hardly used or seen. These spaces can be the perfect home for more practical items like garbage cans or firewood. If you don’t have a walkway on at least one side of your home, it might be something to consider so guests can easily navigate from the front to the back.
5. Choosing Your Plants
Before purchasing any plants or flowers, make sure you are familiar with the landscape. Think about where the sun rises and sets and what will grow well in our climate. You’ll want to take into consideration the shapes and sizes of each of the plans that you pick out. Be sure to include different ranges of sizes, shapes, and textures.
6. Finishing Touches
Adding potted plants, hanging containers, and window boxes are a great way to take your landscaping to the next level. Incorporate your personality by picking out different shapes and colors of containers throughout your yard.
Take some time to plan out what will work best for your yard. Use these six easy steps, and you’ll be on your way to a beautifully landscaped home!
